Care of the Alzheimer's Patient at Home

Alzheimer's disease was first described by Professor Alois Alzheimer in a 55 year old German woman in 1907. Earlier in this century, it was thought to represent an uncommon form of presenile dementia but it has come to be seen as the most common cause of denentia in the elderly. Whereas it is thought that the annual cost of care for an advanced case would be about $47,000, the emotional cost to the family and caregiver is not quantifiable. . As the population ages, the number of such effected individuals will increase and the number of these patients that will need to be cared for at home will skyrocket. The goal of this article is to put forth practical suggestions for the home care and management of the advanced Alzheimer's patient.
