At age 15, Mary moved to Baytown and attended Robert E. Lee High School. Following graduation, she attended Lee College and the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in history and lived at Grace Hall.

While at Lee College she met and fell in love with Raymond Martin who intended to join her at UT. Unfortunately, his family comittments and finances would not permit him to follow her to UT. He layed out of school and worked for 2 years before beginning Rice Institute.

Following graduation, Mary returned to Baytown and taught at Baytown Junior High School. She waited until Raymond graduated from Rice and had a job before marrying. They were married in Talledega on August 2, 1941.
